
Over a period of 40 years, David Lewis has amassed over 400 old masters, 19th-century and impressionist paintings, creating one of the largest private collections in Britain since the second world war. Until recently Lewis has remained anonymous, but on the eve of a major exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, for which the prolific collector is lending 64 works, Lewis talks about his dark taste in art and why he is so attracted to Jan van Hemessen’s Christ as the Man of Sorrows, around 1540, right, among other works.
